    On a small-gain approach to distributed event-triggered control

    In this paper the problem of stabilizing large-scale systems by distributed controllers, where the controllers exchange information via a shared limited communication medium is addressed. Event-triggered sampling schemes are proposed, where each system decides when to transmit new information across the network based on the crossing of some error thresholds. Stability of the interconnected large-scale system is inferred by applying a generalized small-gain theorem. Two variations of the event-triggered controllers which prevent the occurrence of the Zeno phenomenon are also discussed.Comment: 30 pages, 9 figure

    Background: In Indonesia the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding in 2007 was 32%. Although breastfeeding is a common practice, exclusive breastfeeding remains unpracticed optimally due to some influential factors. One factor to be considered here is father\u27s role. However, until recently studies regarding father\u27s role in breastfeeding practice have not been fully explored in Indonesia. In Bukittinggi exclusive breastfeeding rate was 63,5% in 2008.Objective: To investigate the relationship between the father\u27s role and breastfeeding practices in Bukittinggi Municipality.Method: This was an observational study with cross-sectional study design. Subjects were families with babies aged 0 – 6 months using non probability sampling. The independent variable was the father\u27s role and the dependent variable was breastfeeding practices. Meanwhile, the extraneous variables included knowledge, attitude, mother\u27s occupation; father\u27s working hours in a day, and income. The data were analyzed using univariable analysis, bivariable analysis with chi-square test, and multivariable analysis with logistic regression.Results: The result of multivariable analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between the father\u27s role and breastfeeding practice, by including father\u27s knowledge, mother\u27s knowledge, father\u27s attitude and mother\u27s attitude that could predict by 12% (RP= 1.93; 95% CI= 1.36 – 2.74).Conclusion: The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding practices in the supporting father group was greater than in the group that non-supporting father. The recommendations are that fathers should be targeted audience in the breastfeeding promotion

    A scale-dependent model to represent changing aerodynamic roughness of ablating glacier ice based on repeat topographic surveys

    Turbulent fluxes make a substantial and growing contribution to the energy balance of ice surfaces globally, but are poorly constrained owing to challenges in estimating the aerodynamic roughness length (z0). Here, we used structure from motion (SfM) photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) surveys to make plot-scale 2-D and 3-D microtopographic estimations of z0 and upscale these to map z0 across an ablating mountain glacier. At plot scales, we found spatial variability in z0 estimates of over two orders of magnitude with unpredictable z0 trajectories, even when classified into ice surface types. TLS-derived surface roughness exhibited strong relationships with plot-scale SfM z0 estimates. At the glacier scale, a consistent increase in z0 of ∌0.1 mm d−1 was observed. Space-for-time substitution based on time since surface ice was exposed by snow melt confirmed this gradual increase in z0 over 60 d. These measurements permit us to propose a scale-dependent temporal z0 evolution model where unpredictable variability at the plot scale gives way to more predictable changes of z0 at the glacier scale. This model provides a critical step towards deriving spatially and temporally distributed representations of z0 that are currently lacking in the parameterisation of distributed glacier surface energy balance models

    European Echinococcosis Registry: Human Alveolar Echinococcosis, Europe, 1982–2000

    Surveillance for alveolar echinococcosis in central Europe was initiated in 1998. On a voluntary basis, 559 patients were reported to the registry. Most cases originated from rural communities in regions from eastern France to western Austria; single cases were reported far away from the disease-“endemic” zone throughout central Europe. Of 210 patients, 61.4% were involved in vocational or part-time farming, gardening, forestry, or hunting. Patients were diagnosed at a mean age of 52.5 years; 78% had symptoms. Alveolar echinococcosis primarily manifested as a liver disease. Of the 559 patients, 190 (34%) were already affected by spread of the parasitic larval tissue. Of 408 (73%) patients alive in 2000, 4.9% were cured. The increasing prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis in foxes in rural and urban areas of central Europe and the occurrence of cases outside the alveolar echinococcosis–endemic regions suggest that this disease deserves increased attention

    Several aspects of the control of large-scale systems communicating over digital channels are considered. In particular, the issue of delay, quantization, and packet loss is addressed with the help of dynamic quantization. New small-gain results suitable for networked control systems are introduced and it is shown that many of the known small-gain conditions are equivalent. The issue of bandwidth limitations is addressed with the help of event-triggered control. A novel approach termed parsimonious triggering is introduced, which helps to rule out the occurrence of an infinite number of triggering events within finite time. Moreover, the feasibility of the presented approaches is demonstrated by numerical examples.Es werden großskalige Netzwerke betrachtet, bei denen die ZustandsrĂŒckfĂŒhrung ĂŒber digitale KommunikationskanĂ€le erfolgt. Typische Effekte digitaler Kommunikation wie Totzeiten, Quantisierung und Paketverlust werden mithilfe der sogenannten dynamischen Quantisierung bearbeitet. Im Kontext der Netzwerkkontrollsysteme werden neue small-gain Ergebnisse eingefĂŒhrt, die auf den Bedarf der digitalen Kommunikation eingehen. Des Weiteren wird gezeigt, dass viele der aus der Literatur bekannten small-gain Ergebnisse Ă€quivalent sind. Eventbasierte Kontrollstrategien werden vorgestellt, um das Problem der BandbreitenbeschrĂ€nkung zu umgehen. Ein neuer Ansatz, parsimonious triggering genannt, wird vorgestellt, um das Problem des unendlich oft Schaltens in endlicher Zeit zu umgehen.     Glacier snowline determination from Terrestrial Laser Scanning intensity data

    Accurately identifying the extent of surface snow cover on glaciers is important for extrapolating end of year mass balance measurements, constraining the glacier surface radiative energy balance and evaluating model simulations of snow cover. Here, we use auxiliary information from Riegl VZ-6000 Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) return signals to accurately map the snow cover over a glacier throughout an ablation season. Three classification systems were compared, and we find that supervised classification based on TLS signal intensity alone is outperformed by a rule-based classification employing intensity, surface roughness and an associated optical image, which achieves classification accuracy of 68–100%. The TLS intensity signal shows no meaningful relationship with surface or bulk snow density. Finally, we have also compared our Snow Line Altitude (SLA) derived from TLS with SLA derived from the model output, as well as one Landsat image. The results of the model output track the SLA from TLS well, however with a positive bias. In contrast, automatic Landsat-derived SLA slightly underestimates the SLA from TLS. To conclude, we demonstrate that the snow cover extent can be mapped successfully using TLS, although the snow mass remains elusive
